These storms start as smaller, regional storms before they merge together and form one giant storm that covers the entire planet! They are able to continue as the sunlight cannot reach the surface of Mars, so the dust absorbs the energy and keeps particles lifted. They eventually subside and fall back to the surface after a number of months.
