Tom Louth answered on 5 Oct 2022:
I am a mechanical design engineer. That means I specialise in designing things, and those things are mechanical. More specifically I am part of a big team designing a scientific instrument which will be used with the world’s biggest telescope to look into space.
I work with scientists who tell us what they want; project managers who boss us around; systems engineers who make sure everything fits together; optical engineers who choose where all the mirrors, lenses and cameras go; electronics engineers who choose the motors and sensors; software engineers who write the software to control everything and see the results; technicians who are building prototypes and helping me run small tests, and will actually build the instrument; and other mechanical engineers who design the structures and cooling systems.
