That is a massive factor! One of the big study areas across many different groups focuses on how we as humans will deal with extended periods of isolation associated with space travel.

The research I’ve done with colleagues about how people cope in long periods of isolation and confinement (like in the Antarctic or submarine missions or long expeditions or sailing round the world solo) suggests that yes, people do miss home but they know that it is going to be a challenge and they prepare for it. The toughest times are important dates when you would usually celebrate with family – Christmas for Christians or Ramadan for Muslims, for instance.
